Captain’s Log 270526 – Birdwatching on the Ébrié Lagoon: A Hidden Surprise

Captain's Log 270526
Many people are genuinely surprised when they discover just how much birdlife exists on the Ébrié Lagoon — often just minutes from the bustling heart of Abidjan
Despite being surrounded by a major city, the vast mangrove forests, quiet backwaters, and river mouths create a rich and productive ecosystem. The lagoon and its wetlands support well over 100 species of birds, making it a wonderful (and often overlooked) destination for anyone who loves nature.
What You're Likely to See On a typical relaxed cruise you can easily spot 20 to 40 different species. Some of the highlights include:
- Goliath Heron – the largest heron in the world, often standing like a statue in the shallows
- African Fish Eagle – soaring high with its haunting call echoing across the water
- Pied and Malachite Kingfishers – flashing brilliant colours as they dive for fish
- Great White Egret & Grey Heron – elegant and plentiful
- African Darter (Snakebird) – drying its wings on dead branches like a prehistoric creature
- Pink-backed Pelicans – gliding in formation at sunset
- White-crested Tiger Heron and Pel's Fishing Owl – rarer treasures, especially at dawn or dusk
- Various terns, waders, and occasionally Ospreys near the Vridi Canal
Best Places for Birdwatching on the Lagoon We have several favourite areas that consistently deliver beautiful sightings:
- Quiet mangrove channels in the central and eastern lagoon — perfect for herons, kingfishers and darters
- River mouths where fresh water mixes with the lagoon — high bird activity
- Protected backwaters and bays away from main boat traffic — ideal for peaceful drifting and observation
- Areas closer to the Vridi Canal — good for pelicans, seabirds and fish eagles
Best Times for Birdwatching
- Early morning (sunrise to 10am) — birds are most active and the light is soft
- Late afternoon through sunset — golden hour magic, with pelicans and eagles often putting on a show
How We Do It on Our Charters We keep a good pair of binoculars on the boat. If you mention you're interested in birds when booking, we'll plan a slower, quieter route with more time spent drifting in the best spots. The captain enjoys pointing out species and interesting behaviour.
It's never rushed. Some guests simply enjoy the occasional beautiful sighting while relaxing with a drink. Others are keen to spot as many species as possible. Either way, it adds a wonderful extra layer to the experience.
There's something very special about sitting on the boat in complete silence, surrounded by mangroves, with only the sound of birds and gentle water lapping against the hull — all while the Abidjan skyline glows in the distance. It's a powerful reminder of how wild and alive the lagoon still is.
Would you like to include some relaxed birdwatching on your next sunset cruise or private charter? Just let us know and we'll tailor the trip to give you the best experience possible.
