Captain’s Log 210526 – Fishing on the Ébrié Lagoon: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions is: Can we actually fish on the Ébrié Lagoon?

The answer is yes — and it can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a charter.

The lagoon is a rich ecosystem thanks to its vast mangroves, river inflows, and connection to the Atlantic via the Vridi Canal. Local fishermen have worked these waters for generations.

Best Times to Fish

  • Early morning (sunrise to 9–10am) — calm water and active feeding
  • Late afternoon through sunset (16:00 onwards) — my favourite time. Beautiful light and the fish become very active
  • Fishing is best when the tide is moving (incoming or outgoing)

Favourite Fishing Spots on the Lagoon

We choose areas based on conditions and what you want:

  • Quiet mangrove channels — sheltered, peaceful, excellent for tilapia and catfish
  • River mouths (where freshwater meets the lagoon) — very productive for a variety of species
  • Areas closer to the Vridi Canal — better chance of bigger fish like barracuda and tarpon
  • Protected bays and drop-offs away from heavy boat traffic — good all-round fishing with beautiful scenery

Common Fish Species You Might Catch & How They Fight

  • Tilapia — Very common and strong fighters. They pull hard and often make sudden runs. Great sport on light tackle.
  • Catfish — Plentiful, especially in the mangroves. They fight deep and stubborn, often hugging the bottom.
  • Snapper — Excellent fighters with powerful head shakes. Very good eating.
  • Barracuda — Fast, aggressive, and exciting. They make long, powerful runs and spectacular jumps.
  • Jacks — Very acrobatic and strong. Known for fast runs and aerial displays.
  • Ladyfish — Extremely acrobatic. They jump and shake their heads violently — great fun but not great eating.
  • Bonga Shad & Mojarra — Smaller but fight well in numbers. Often caught in good quantities.

How We Handle Fishing on Our Charters

  • Basic good-quality rods and reels are available on the boat
  • We use natural bait (prawns, small fish, worms)
  • Catch and release is our default (to protect the lagoon)
  • If you want to keep a few fish for the crew to prepare fresh on board, just let us know in advance
  • The crew will clean and cook any fish you decide to keep

Fishing with us is relaxed and part of the overall experience — not a serious tournament. Many guests fish for an hour or two, then switch to swimming, drinks, snacks, or just drifting and enjoying the sunset and the birds.

If you're a keen angler and want a proper fishing-focused charter (half-day or full-day), mention it when booking and we'll arrange better equipment and target the best areas.

Fishing on the Ébrié Lagoon is about more than catching fish — it's about the peaceful setting, the birds around you, and creating memories on the water.

Would you like to add some fishing to your sunset cruise or private charter? Just tell us your preferences and we'll make it part of your personalised experience.
